Walking through the Mountain in the Center of Town: The Schlossberg Tunnel

Entry point on the East side

The tunnel entry on the East side is reached from Karmeliterplatz through the gate in the middle of the building facing the Schlossberg by walking up the cobble-stone street aptly named "Am Fuße des Schlossbergs" (at the foot of the Castle Rock).

Kriegssteig Schlossbergsteig

This foot path up to the Buergerbastei and Uhrturm via zig-zagging flights of stone masonry stairs on the West-facing rock face of the hill was build with prisoner-of-war labor during World War I, which is why it is called Kriegssteig (war path).

built into the rock wall on the West-facing side of Schlossberg
An additional segment leading to the Schlossberg restaurant was added in more recent times.
